Topic: PATTERNS AND PRESENTATIONS OF PAEDIATRIC DIABETES IN LASUTH
Description:
INTRODUCTION: Childhood diabetes is gaining more awareness particularly in the developing world. Worldwide, the prevalence of type 1 diabetes is much less than that of type 2 diabetes. This is more so in children where all diabetes was once regarded as type 1. With the pandemic of obesity, it is expected that children will develop diabetes at an earlier age than was previously recorded.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To document the clinical patterns and presentation of childhood diabetes. To determine the prevalence of the two major types of diabetes in children.
METHODOLOGY: Children with diabetes who attend the paediatric endocrinology clinic of the LASUTH will be recruited for the study. Biodata, clinical features and results of investigation will be documented in a proforma. Collected data will be analysed using statistical software package.
EXPECTED RESULTS: It is expected that most forms of diabetes will be type 1. It is also expected that there will be an increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes particularly among the adolescents who are overweight and have a family history
ADDITION TO BODY OF KNOWLEDGE: Proportions of type 1 to type 2 paediatric diabetes in Lagos will be known. This will be useful for planning institutional protocols and allocation of resources. It may also have an impact on the direction of diabetes screening programmes in children.

A THREE-YEAR REVIEW OF PAEDIATRIC ENDOCRINE DISORDERS AT A TERTIARY HOSPITAL IN LAGOS
Introduction
The global increase in paediatric endocrine disorders (PED) is thought to be a result of multiple factors including changing lifestyles, environmental pollution and increasing awareness and diagnostic capabilities. Studies on the prevalence of paediatric endocrine disorders in the developing world are few. Available studies have documented the spectrum of paediatric endocrine diseases.
An audit of PED at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) two years ago revealed type 1 diabetes mellitus as the commonest diagnosis. Since then many more children with PED continue to be referred from various centres.
Aim
The aim of the present study was to identify the commonest causes of paediatric endocrine disorders at the LASUTH.
Methods
Records of patients who presented in the paediatric endocrine unit between March 2017 and March 2020 were reviewed.
Results
A total of 172 patients were seen over the three-year period representing 0.45% of the total paediatric patients seen within the period. There were more females 90(52.3%) than males 79(45.9%) and three patients (1.7%) presented with disorders of sexual differentiation. Age of presentation ranged between 11 days and 16 years with mean of 6.27 ± 4.5 years.
Contribution
The overview of distribution is helpful for understanding the PED spectrum, putting policies in place and planning for adequate health care coverage and resource allocation
