Topic: EFFECTS OF NEWSPAPER ANTICIPATION GUIDE AND LEARNING TOGETHER ON CIVIC EDUCATION OUTCOMES OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Description: The Nigerian nation state appears to be disunited. The youth restiveness inter-tribal disturbances in some parts of the nation, kidnap incidences, campus cultism, political and extra judicial killings, militancy and bomb blasts are all indicators to lack of peace in the country. However, students all over the world are fast belonging more sophisticated than ever. Attempting to shield them from the realities of life that Newspaper cover on a daily basis is an exercise in futility. Further restricting reading to textbooks deprives students of the opportunity to become better citizen making newspapers as a source of binging current events and captivating information to the classroom to teach for the aims and purpose of resolving issues in social studies might be valuable reasons among many others presented in some related research studies Street, 2002; Deveci 2005; Segall & Smith, 2006 .Unluer and Yasar 2012 also emphasized that the newspap9ers as an important teaching tool for social studies are unfortunately not used sufficiently in classrooms Unluer

Research Details

Concerns about reported acts of civic irresponsibility call for continued exploration of innovative methods of teaching Civic Education to enhance civic competence among Nigerian youths. This study investigated the effects of newspaper anticipation guide, learning-together and civic education learning outcomes of senior secondary school students in Lagos State. The study also examined the moderating effects of gender and self-efficacy on students achievement and attitude in Civic Education. A pre-test, post-test, quasi experimental design with a 3 2 3 factorial matrix was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of three intact classes with three hundred and two 302 students drawn from public co-educational secondary schools in Lagos State which were selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Each class was randomly allocated to one of the treatment conditions, namely, Newspaper Anticipation Guide, Learning-Together and Conventional strategies. Three measuring instruments were used for the collection of data: i Civic Education Achievement Test CEAT with 50 multiple choice items r= 0.87 , ii Civic Education Attitude Questionnaire CEAQ with 18 items r = 0.90 , and Civic Education Self-Efficacy Scale r = 0.89 . There were also two instructional packages Newspaper Anticipation Guide Instructional Package NAGIP and Learning-Together Instructional Package LTIP used for the experiment. Data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the analysis of covariance was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Bonferroni post hoc analysis was employed to determine the source of significant difference where it existed.
