Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Deficits and their Perceived Consequences for Girls in an Urban Nigerian Educational Setting
The study investigated the effect of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions on the academic performances and health outcomes of secondary school female students. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The sample size of the study comprised 498 students selected from six secondary schools in Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State using random sampling technique. WASH questionnaire was used in data collection. The contents and face validity of the questionnaire were done. A pilot study was conducted to determine the reliability of the instrument using Cronbach Alpha reliability test. Reliability coefficient of 0.75 was established. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics of frequency counts with percentage and t-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. WASH facilities in the study area were inadequate as respondents do not have adequate supply of portable water. The toilets facilities, menstrual hygiene support and hygiene education were poor. T-test result shows that WASH practices perceived to have significant impact on health and academic performance of students (P<0.005). Government agencies, in collaboration with local authorities and development partners, should priorities funding for the construction and maintenance of gender-sensitive sanitation facilities in public schools.
