water transportation is an integral component of the development of intra and inter-modal transport system in lagos state.The physical environment of lagos is well-suited to accommodate water transportation simply because about 17 percent of the state is composed of lagoon and waterways (Akande,2018).Indeed, Lagos earned itself the appellations of being the 'city of acquatic splendour' which in local parlance to 'Eko aromi sa legbe legbe' because of its impressive network of creeks,lagoons and the massive stretch of the Atlantic ocean.To be sure,the main bodies of water in Lagos state are the popular Kuramo Creek,the Lagos Lagoon,Ologe Lagoon and the Ipokia Creek/Porto-Novo Creek,Badagry Creek as well as the vast stretch of the Atlantic Ocean previously noted ( Adejare,2011).This impressive network of creeks and lagoons gave Lagos State an advantage to explore and harness the advantages of inland Waterways system for the movement of goods and persons across major regions of the state and beyond.

Aims and Objectives 

i. To analyse historically the driving forces behind inland water transport development in Lagos State between 1967 and 2007.

ii. To examine the various dimensions of inland waterways transportation in Lagos State. 

iii. To identify and discuss the nature and uses of water transportation in Lagos during the period under study.

iv. To examine the contribution of water transportation to the socio-economic development of Lagos State in the period under study.

v. To examine the challenges faced by inland water transportation.
