IMPROVING THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS OF BASIC CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION CPR AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.

Background: Sudden cardiac arrest SCA is a serious medical emergency with a low survival probability if cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR is not commenced within minutes. Cardiac arrests and deaths have been reported in schools. The knowledge of CPR among teachers is poor.Objective: To determine the baseline knowledge of Lagos school teachers on CPR and train them on quality CPR. Methods: A multi-stage interventional study in which 120 schools will randomly be selected across the six educational districts of Lagos. Twenty schools 10 public and private schools each will be systematically selected from each district by listing all schools per district and then selecting every fifth school, starting from the number two school. Four 4 teachers will be recruited per school using random sampling. A total of 480 teachers will be recruited into the study. Pre- and post-training surveys will be done to assess the impact of training.
