Shaping Futures Early: The Role of Early Childhood Education in Influencing Girls’ Aspirations and Career Choices in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
Despite
global efforts to promote gender equity in STEM, girls remain significantly
underrepresented in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) fields in
Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa. This underrepresentation often stems
from early socialisation, gendered play, and limited exposure to digital
technologies during formative years. This study investigates how early
childhood education (ECE) environments can positively shape girls’ attitudes,
self-efficacy, and career aspirations in ICT. Guided by social cognitive career
theory, the research aims to (1) explore how ECE curricula and teacher
practices either reinforce or challenge gendered perceptions of technology; (2)
assess the availability and utilisation of ICT resources in early learning settings;
and (3) examine how early exposure influences girls’ interest in
technology-related careers. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study will
collect data through classroom observations, interviews with ECE teachers, and
age-appropriate pictorial surveys with girls aged 5–8 in selected public and
private early childhood centres in Lagos State. It is expected that girls in
ECE settings with gender-responsive, technology-integrated pedagogy will
demonstrate higher ICT self-efficacy and more diverse career aspirations. The
study will contribute to knowledge by highlighting the critical window of early
childhood as a strategic intervention point for gender-inclusive STEM pathways.
For society, it offers evidence-based recommendations for curriculum reform, teacher
training, and policy initiatives aimed at dismantling gender barriers in ICT
from the earliest stages of education.
