Globally, tick control is based mainly on the repeated use of acaricides. In Nigeria, ticks are mainly controlled by using a variety of synthetic acaricides. The aim of the study is to characterize tick species and investigate in vitro activity of selected medicinal plants on ticks.Objectives:1. To identify various ticks collected from southwest of Nigeria.2. Determine the biochemical constituents of the selected medicinal plants using qualitative and quantitative analysis.3. Determine the chemical constituents using GMCS/LCMS4. Conduct in vitro activity of the selected medicinal plants.MethodologyI. Study Design: This study will employ an experimental in vitro immersion method.ii. Identification of the Plant Materials: The plants were selected based on the scientific and ethnomedical information in the literature. The selected plants will be collected, identified, and verified with taxonomical studies.iii. Crude Extract Preparation: Fresh leaves, stem and bark of selected plants will be separately cleaned with tap water to remove dirt and soil particles, dried for 14 days, mechanically grinded, and powdered using a blender. Powdered specimen will be subjected to extraction.iv. Phytochemical Screening: The process will be carried out to assess the qualitative chemical composition of crude extracts using common methods to identify the major natural chemical groups and secondary metabolites present in the plantsv. Study Parasite Collection, Transportation, and Identification: Ticks were collected from naturally infested cattle in Southwest of Nigeria.vi. Preparation of Concentrations of Crude Methanolic Extracts: The dried extracts were diluted in distilled water at different concentrations required for the bioassays for all tested plants.IMPACTThe study will have positive impact in the search for lead in isolation of bioactive compounds that will eventually produce non-toxic, tolerable, and highly effective natural insecticides..
