Research Interest

Topic: YORUBA STYLISTICS AND COMMUNICATION ARTS

Description: My research interest focuses on Yoruba stylistics. Stylistics straddles Yoruba language with literature. This urges me to make use of Yoruba literary texts in my research activities in stylistics. I have tried to unveil the use of language and some seemingly esoteric traditional materials employed by some prominent Yoruba literary and creative writers in their various works, identifying the types, functions and interpretations of these works and their relevance to contemporary society. Yoruba Communication Arts is a relatively new area of study in Yoruba discipline. The sub-discipline is about two decades, and largely initiated and promoted by the Lagos State University. My interest has been geared towards the non-verbal aspect of the Yoruba indigenous communication because in my observation, it has received less attention by scholars despite its importance in vital areas like security, democracy, economy and, especially for societal development in culture preservation and perpetuation.

A Synergy of Yoruba Traditional and Modern Methods in Tackling Insecurity in Nigeria: An Analysis of Selected Yoruba Novels

Research Details

Insecurity has become seemingly intractable in the global space, and, as a result creative writers have expressed concern in this serious issue. Previous scholars have discussed various methods of operation by criminals, types of criminals, weapons and various ways of combating crime but have failed to look at the synergy between the traditional and modern methods of curbing crime. This work attempts to fill the vacuum. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to synergize the Yoruba traditional and modern techniques in tackling insecurity in Nigeria. The methodology adopted is qualitative content analysis with the theory of sociology of literature. Three Yoruba crime novels are purposively selected and the crime-related contents will be analyzed vis- -vis the real insecurity in the country by extrapolation. This paper hopes to provide real information about security challenges in the country while maintaining that neither the traditional nor the modern method may tackle insecurity alone but rather the synergy of both. This will not only help the government but also the inhabitants of the country.
