Democratic Governance Practice and Infrastructural Development in West Africa: Perspectives from Nigeria s Post-Independence Era.
This paper interrogates why democracy has not brought about good governance or bring about infrastructural development in West Africa, using post-independent Nigeria as a case study. It argues that democratic politics and good governance are often associated with the judicious use of resources for the well-being of the citizens irrespective of party affiliations. This would appear not to have been the case of Nigeria s post-independence development. Infrastructural development is the basis of measuring the performance of a good democratic government and it is often seen as an index of good governance practice. The quality of life of the citizens of any state is related directly to the infrastructural condition of the state. In Asian democracies, development is built upon the theory that reflects the basic needs and priorities of the people. This accounts largely for the huge developmental strides achieved in the continent within few years of independence, unlike in West Africa where illiberal democracy is practiced and their leaders could not get it right by their inability to provide basic needed infrastructural facilities. The study adopted the descriptive research method by utilizing primary and secondary sources of historical narrative. The paper submits that a developing economy like Nigeria would need to align its infrastructural growth with human development goals. This would lead to sustained economic growth accompanied by good education as well as skill development of human resources.
