Current Research

Journalism or PR: Examining media coverage of Lagos State University under Fagbohun s administration

Research Details

Lagos State University under the administration of immediate past vice-chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun witnessed tremendous growth, securing multiple research grants across faculties among several other achievements; culminating in the university being ranked the second-best in Nigeria by the Times Higher Education THE University ranking. During this period, the university appeared to have regular favourable media mentions, unlike previous mentions which were often negative, focusing on endemic cultism, management problems with staff unions of the university, etc. The administration also witnessed some infractions particularly with the universitys branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU with the eventual sacking of all officials of the union for varied allegations of misconduct. Irrespective of the situation, the image making unit of the university, the Centre for Information, Press and Public Relations CIPPR often parleys media men through varied PR activities to facilitate positive coverage of the university in the media. With the seemingly cordial reporter-source relations existing between the CIPPR unit and journalists covering the beat, we examine news media coverage on LASU over the five-year period of the Fagbohun s administration, and its implication for journalism practice. This study will be conducted using content analysis and in-depth interviews of key actors involved in the LASU-News media relations. The study thus seek to examine the dominant origin, issues, and slant of media reports on LASU over the five-year sample period; interrogating diverse perspectives of key actors on news media coverage of LASU. This study is expected to provide a critical evaluation of the LASU news mentions as true journalistic contents or simply PR. Findings from this study will thus provide additional insights on the potential implications of the nature of relationship existing between news sources and beat reporters for journalism practice
