Topic: Innovative Strategies For Financial Risk Protection Against Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditures In Africa

Description: Financial catastrophe and impoverishment as a result of medical expenses, especially out of pocket OOP expenditures, has been a concern globally, more so, in developing countries where the inadequacy of state provided health system results in alarmingly excessive OOP expenditure. OOP payments for health care comprise more than 10 percent of total household consumption in Africa. Literature suggests that approximately 100 million people are pushed below the poverty line each year by payments for health care . The aim of this present research is to assess the extent of Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditures and factors responsible while exploring innovative interventions

Health Insurance Uptake, Healthcare seeking behaviour and Prevalence of Catastrophic healthcare expenditure among Lagos Residents

Research Details

Health insurance is a health financing mechanism to protect people from catastrophic healthcare costs and is one approach to ensuring Universal Health Coverage UHC . The study aimed to assess the extent of health insurance uptake and factors associated with health insurance uptake in Lagos, Nigeria,including the prevalence of catastrophic healthcare expenditure among Lagos residents.This study had a cross-sectional design, involving about 4000 consenting study participants aged 18 years or older and residing in Lagos State, Nigeria, at the time of the study.A multi-stage sampling techniquewas used for the selection process.A pre-tested questionnaire with both open and closed-ended questions to determine barriers and facilitators of health insurance utilization as well as the impact of health insurance on health-seeking behaviour, healthcare utilization, and catastrophic healthcare expenditures among the respondents was used.The data collected are still being analysed
