Current Research

Evaluation of the preventive and curative roles of Olax Subscorpioidea in diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver diseased male Wistar rats

Research Details

Specific Objectives of Research: a . Conduct preliminary qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analyses of the aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of aerial parts of Senna alata Asuwon Oyinbo , Olax subscorpioidea Ifon , and rhizome of Curculigo pilosa Epakun ; b . Determine the in vitro antioxidants profile of the aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of the plants; c . Determine the secondary metabolites/phytoconstituents in the aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of the plants using gas chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry GC-MS and other spectral studies; d . Evaluate the safety profile of the aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of the plants in animal models using the OECD acute oral toxicity studies and repeat dose sub chronic oral toxicity studies; e . Based on the outcome of objectives a - d determine the most effective of the nine extracts investigated and determine three effective graded oral doses of this extract; f . Evaluate ameliorative potential of the three graded oral doses of the extract in both the preventive and curative models of diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD male Wistar rats using standard procedures; Expected Contribution to Knowledge a . The study will identify the secondary metabolites and their relative abundance in aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of aerial parts of Senna alata Asuwon Oyinbo , Olax subscorpioidea Ifon , and rhizome of Curculigo pilosa Epakun ; b . The study will determine the most effective of the aqueous, ethanolic and 50% hydroethanolic extracts of Senna alata Asuwon Oyinbo , Olax subscorpioidea Ifon , and rhizome of Curculigo pilosa Epakun ; in ameliorating and preventing diet-induced non alcoholic fatty liver diseased male Wistar rats; c . The study will confirm or disapprove the ameliorative or curative activity of the selected plant extracts against NAFLD d . The study is expected to discover pro-drugs for scientists in drug discovery and development
