SIGNIFICANCE OF COSTUMES AND MASKS IN EBI TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL OF EPE DIVISION OF LAGOS STATE
Many scholars of African traditional festivals dwell on the dramaturgy of the masquerade performances that reenact the people's experiences. Little attention is given to the costumes and masks in which the masquerades perform. The costumes and masks are often times treated as objects of covering and disguise. Also, Eyo festival of Lagos state is taken as the only major traditional festival of the state. This has overshadowed many other traditional festivals of the state. Hence, Ebi traditional festival of the Epe Division of the state was purposely selected for study in this research to document this relatively known festival. the documentation will add it to other festivals of the state, revealing the historical content and context of the festival among the people of Epe area. The area of study was divided into three sun-division for easy coverage. Since the festival is a major binging force to the people, a qualitative participant observant research method was employed. Interviews were conducted with eight custodians of the artifacts of celebration, especially the costumes and masks. The interviewees were selected based on their positions and duties perform before, during and after the festival. Six prominent towns were visited and observed. Sematic and Functional Structuralism theories were employed to analyze data and relationship and history of the people respectively. The thesis will add to the volume od scholarly works on the traditional festivals of Lagos State as well as correct the notion of Eyo is the major traditional festival of its people. The research documents the history, origin and relationship of the people within the state and other Ijebu people of Ogun State.
