Natural History of Kidney Injury in Health, Diabetes and hypertension in Lagos State, Nigeria

Research Details

The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing globally and the cost of renal care constitute a significant proportion of government as well as individual spending. This is in addition to avoidable loss of man-hour resulting from time spent by patients in accessing care. Early diagnosis and treatment remains the cheapest option as the cost of care is prohibitive and outcome of CKD is  often sub-optimal, more so in  developing countries like Nigeria.Hypertension and diabetes mellitus are consistently listed as two of the top four major causes of chronic kidney disease in Nigeria. However, there are paucity of data on the pattern of kidney disease in these systemic diseases as well as in the apparently healthy population.

There are various tools available for the assessment of  kidney injury. Some of these tools are simple and widely available yet these conditions are still under-diagnosed. We previously reported a crude prevalence of 23.4% for kidney damage in Nigeria, using simple tools like proteinuria and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate eGFR), with proteinuria occurring in 88.34% of the participants. We advocated for early detection and treatment through community diagnosis and identification of health problems to managing CKD. There is a need for the use of different assessment tools to define the pattern of kidney injury in healthy individuals and in those with diseases known to be common primary causes of CKD.
