Topic: HYPERTENSIVE HEART DISEAE

Description: HYPERTENSIVE HEART DISEASE IS THE MOST PREVALENT HEART DISEASE IN NIGERIA AND WORLD WIDE. I HAVE COLLABORATED WITH OTHER PHYSICIANS, SURGEON, PSYCHIATRISTS, CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST, AND PHARMACOLOGISTS IN STUDIES THAT LOOK AT SEVERAL ASPECT OF THE DISEASE SUCH AS SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC , CARDIAC BIOMARKERS, PSYCHO-SOCIAL STRESS, COGNITIVE FUNCTION, ERECTILE FUNCTION, LIPID PROFILE PARAMETERS AND OXIDATIVE STRESS PROFILES OF HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.

Current Research

DIAGNOSTIC USEFULNESS OF NT-proBNP IN ASYMPTOMATIC LEFT VENTRICULAR DYSUNCTION IN BLACK HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS.

Research Details

INTRODUCTIONHypertensive patients with Left Ventricular LV dysfunction, may be asymptomatic early in the disease process but tend to develop overt heart failure later on. While the usefulness of NT-proBNP in the early detection of LV dysfunction has been well studied amongst the western population, there remains relative paucity of information about its usefulness among black hypertensive patients. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic usefulness of NT-proBNP in the early detection of asymptomatic LV dysfunction in black hypertensive patients.METHODSThe LV function of 134 patients with hypertension who were never in heart failure and 89 age- and sex- matched normotensive subjects were assessed by echocardiography and serum NT-proBNP assayRESULTSNT-proBNP were 175.21 227.75 and 430.13 491.88 pg/ml, p=0.017, in hypertensive subjects without and with Asymptomatic Left Ventricular Dysfunction, respectively. Using the NT- proBNP level of 56pg/ml obtained amongst the control subjects, NT-proBNP level had a sensitivity of 62.8%, specificity of 60.9%, positive predictive value of 88% and a negative predictive value of 26.4%.The conclusion was that NT-pro BNP is useful in the diagnosis and follow up of Hypertensive heart failure patients with asymptomatic LV dysfunction.
