Portrayal of Mental Health Issues in Nollywood Movies

Research Details

Mental illness is not infrequent, and the global concern of mental illness or disorder is estimated to range 15% by the year 2020. Studies have shown that the public consider taking their patient to religious places rather than psychiatrist hospital as orthodox psychiatric practice has developed greatly in many developing countries. There is a need for the media to buttress the causes, effect, place of treatment of mental illness in an acceptable way to the public and also make the government see reasons to care for mental health patient more. This study identified how mental health are being portrayed in Nollywood movies, how new innovation on the mentally challenged person can bring about sustainable development that will aid growth in the society at large and examined how mental health patient are being treated whether Orthodox or medically by a Psychiatrist in a Psychiatric hospital. Qualitative content analysis was carried on 5 selected movies Olooture, 12, Osunwon 12, and Crazy People using purposive sampling techniques with the coding guide using thematic analysis. The findings of this research shows that there are various causes of mental illness which include drug abuse, ritualism, attacking and backfiring of negative intention towards another person and lot, also lessons can be derived from the patient lives that are of great benefit to the society at large, another finding shows that the government are not doing anything about the mentally challenged people as no awareness, no much care is being extended to most of the mentally challenged persons are roaming about on the street. This study concludes that mental illness is an issue of less concern by the society and government. However, it was evident from that neglect of mental health patient and places of treatment played a major role in aggregating the issue.
