IMPACT OF DRONE TECHNOLOGY ON CONTEMPORARY NOLLYWOOD MOVIE PRODUCTION
The integration of drones
and drone technology into film production has seen a wave of advanced and
developed camera shots that help in movie production, particularly in the
Nollywood movie productions. This study examined impact drone technology
on Gang of Lagos. Specifically, the objectives of the study
include determining the frequency of drone technology usage in
the Nigerian movie industry, the magnitude, prominence and messages of
media frames captured with drone technology in the selected Nigerian movie at a
particular time. The study adopted Technological determinism and Diffusion
of Innovation theory. The study adopted the quantitative method using
the content analysis to examine the contents of various scenes where drone
shots were used in telling the story in the movie Gang of
Lagos by Kay Jegede and Jade Osiberu The method
comprises a deductive and systematic analysis, through a list of predetermined
frames and media package. Purposive Sampling technique was adopted for this study.
Majority of the scenes
were shot without the use of drone as drone had a limited magnitude covered in
the movie, majority of the scenes were shot in Lagos, Isale Eko to be precise.
The study also found out that majority of the shots that were captured by drone
were centred in Isale Eko. The prominence of drone technology usage was low
compared to other scenes. Drone captured more shots that were used in
communicating ghetto life and movie communicated more of human interest
frame. The study therefore recommended that producers should use more
of drones in capturing camera shots, this would help them capture required
shots in professional ways, production managers and producers should increase
the usage of drone in various movie scene so as to widen the magnitude of drone
usage
