Research Details

The study seeks to explore the handling of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions by asking the following questions: 1.Do sexual harassment does occur in the tertiary institutions in Nigeria? If it does, to what degree does it occur?2.What are the common forms of sexual harassment in the institutions?3.What is the perceived impact of sexual harassment on the victims that is germane to making them to succumb to the pressures of sexual harasser?4.What response do the victims of sexual harassment make to wade off the harassment or in response to it?5.Are cases of sexual harassment properly handled by the schools?6.What are the remote causes of sexual harassment in academic institutions?7.In what relative degrees or proportions are members of the university community victims of sexual harassment?8.Are there differences between the perception of the male and female on sexual harassment in schools?thus it was hypothesised that sexual harassment is fuelled by family instability and poor sexuality education while female students are the most focused victims and teachers and students are the harassers.A Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to evaluate the null hypothesis that two sets of scores Male/Female sexually harassed on the handling of sexual harassment cases would not differ significantly. The results of the test had no basis to reject the null hypothesis. The overall handling of cases was found to be deserving of better attention though, which was the reason for suggesting that free website for making complaints of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions be created in all tertiary institutions.
