Research Interest

Topic: Minimalist Program: An Introduction With African Languages

Description:

There have been a number of foreign books on the Minimalist Program, a theory propounded by Noam Chomsky in the 1993/1995 for the syntactic analysis of languages of the world. There are some articles written by African scholars on the theory as well but there is no specific comprehensive book written by Nigeria linguist on the theory. Students often have issues and confusions in understanding and application of the theory because of the way foreign languages are projected. coming in contact with African languages, teachers and scholars often have difficulties using the rather simple theory. This book is going to fill this gap with focus on peculiarities of African languages

The book is aimed at grounding African linguist and young language analysts in the area of Syntax and showcasing the contributions of African languages to the world in the development of the theory. it will focus primarily on African languages for all the language data illustrations and applications of the theory.

The book when completed will help African linguistics students to understand and be able to apply the Minimalist Program appropriately in their analysis in long essays and thesis.

The book will contribute to the body of knowledge in the study of linguistics. It will equip both the teachers and students with the required knowledge in syntactic analysis taking the peculiarities of African languages into considerations.

Current Research

Beyond Interrogative Force to Emphatic mapping

Research Details

In syntactic analysis, scholars have often look at the activation of interrogative force within the structure of Yes-No and content word constructions without recourse to looking beyond the scope to what it triggers in information structuring. Thus, internal structure are examines without examining what it triggers as a product of other structure.

This research adopts Rizzi's (1997) Split Complementizer Phrase of Cartographic analysis as its theoretical framework. It also adopts an ethnographic design.

The research will look at the interaction of interrogative phrase with other discourse projections like emphatic and focus activation. the research will consider derivation of sentence structures that often lead to the  addition of interrogative force, basically content word questions and polar questions. The cartographic architecture of the structure as it aligns or mirrors Rizzi's (1997) analysis would be examines to show the contributions of African languages in the development of the theory.

The research will contribute to the ongoing debate on the structure of interrogative constructions and also go beyond the traditional analysis which only represents the types.
