Assessment of knowledge, practice and level of preparedness of Dentists practicing in Nigeria towards COVID-19 pandemic. ACCEPTED
Introduction: COVID-19 is a highly infectious disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and was first reported to WHO on the 31st of December, 2019 in Wuhan, China.
Aim: This aim of the study is to determine the knowledge, practice and preparedness of dentists in Nigeria towards the outbreak of COVID-19.
Methodology: This was an online cross-sectional survey involving all dentists practicing in Nigeria. These questionnaires contained a brief description of the study, followed by 38 questions which were divided into four sections, namely; Socio-demographics, knowledge, attitude and preparedness.
The survey was on for a period of two weeks after which the responses were collated for analysis.
Result: This study also showed that all the respondents had good knowledge about the mode of transmission of COVID-19. All the respondents agreed that dentists were at higher risk of contracting COVID-19 while performing various dental procedures. A significant percent (35.4percent) do not have training on infection control. Only 51.5percent had PPE in their clinics and the remaining neither have it, or they don’t know if their clinics have PPE. Over 19percent of the respondents reported no fear, while the remaining 80.9percent reported some level of fear
Conclusion: These findings showed that most dentists were little prepared for an outbreak of infection. There should be training and retraining on infection control to ensure that the workforce are competent to carry out their activities. Prevention of infections should be the common primary aim of all healthcare workers. Understanding how infection occurs, how different microorganisms spread and how it can be prevented is vital in disease prevention within a dental setting. Understanding COVID-19 fears and anxieties provide a detailed insight into the practice modifications needed for the benefit of both dental health care personnel and patients.
