It was equally a defining moment for the former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Peter Okebukola, a renowned Scholar and International Researcher as he was decorated as a Distinguished Professor of the University having been found worthy by the University Senate and confirmed by the Governing Council of the University.  

The Governor, Lagos State and the Visitor to the University, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, in his address, disclosed that through Public Private Partnership (PPP), the University would soon get a 6,000 capacity hostel, equipped with modern infrastructure. He added that it is only in an atmosphere of peace and stability that development can thrive. He promised that the government would continue to support the University.

Gov. Ambode congratulated the graduands and urged them to make positive changes with the wealth of knowledge they had acquired in their different fields. “To the graduands, I urge you to be greater than me, be equipped with knowledge to make positive impact, I charge you to go out, conquer the world, make LASU, Lagos and Nigeria proud”. Equally, he commended the Vice Chancellor for his pragmatic approach to running the affairs of the institution and the fascinating news of many achievements emanating from the University within a short space of time. ”I challenge the Management and the Governing Council to position LASU as one of the best five Universities in Nigeria by 2020”.

He added that LASU would host this year’s edition of Ready-Set-Work and one thousand, two hundred (1,200) students from LASU would be taking part as against the five hundred that took part last year. Governor Ambode stated that he was proud to be associated with Distinguished Prof. Peter Okebukola

The Chancellor, Justice Adesola Oguntade (RTD), in his speech, commended Governor Ambode’s focus and zeal in investing massively in the youths by introducing them to the world of entrepreneurship through “Ready Set Work” initiative for final year students of tertiary institutions owned by the State. He thanked the Governor for the numerous infrastructural projects in the University, which in no time would transform LASU into a world class tertiary institution. He congratulated all the graduands on their success.

In his speech, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo lauded the Governor for matching his words with action by investing massively in the University, with a proviso of sustenance of peace and stability, which is manifested in the University in form of stability. He appreciated the Management, Staff and Students for their cooperation.

Prof. Ninalowo used the occasion to reel out the successes recorded in the last one year. Finally, he thanked the Federal Government for its interventions through Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) and Needs Assessment, NUC and JAMB for their support for the University.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor ‘Lanre Fagbohun in his remarks stated that the University had institutionalised quality, especially in teaching, research and service delivery through the Quality Assurance Implementation Committee (QAIC). “While we are not resting on our oars, we can confidently assert that our graduands are repositories of cutting edge knowledge, imbued with the right ethics and requisite intellectual capacity needed for the much-needed personal and societal development in the 21st Century”, the Vice Chancellor boasted.

He thanked the Visitor to the University, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode for his support. He appreciated the Governing Council, the Senate, Principal Officers, Staff and Students for their cooperation and support. He congratulated the graduands and urged them to develop their individual competencies as well as capacities to the full. He reminded them of the golden phrase: We are LASU, We are proud. Finally, he called on corporate bodies, organisations, individuals and friends of the University to assist the University through endowment.

Earlier, on Tuesday, 22nd March, 2017, it was the day for the awards of Diplomas and First degree. A total of Twenty-Eight Thousand, Four Hundred and Thirty-Three (28,433) graduands convocated, with a breakdown as follows: Diploma – 133, First Degree – 28,300, Postgraduate – 8,050 and Ph.D – 57. twenty-six (26) graduands made First Class.

The week long ceremonies started with a Press Conference on Thursday, 16th March, 2017, a Jumat Service on Friday and Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel on Sunday. Other events were the Coconut Breaking Festival, Convocation Play titled: Spirit of Lagos and Convocation Lecture delivered by Mr. Hakeem Oguniran, CEO UACN Property Development Limited.

For the first time in the history of the University Convocation, a Sport Competition for Staff was added with Football, athletics, badminton, draft, table tennis competed for.
